More than Mud: Why Vermont Wetlands Matter

October 14th, 2026

6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Burke Community Building

212 School St, West Burke

A serene landscape featuring a small pond surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage and lush greenery under a clear blue sky.

Did you know that wetlands make up almost 9% of the land in Burke?  Wetlands play an integral role in our landscape: they reduce flood and storm damage, provide erosion control, offer critical fish and wildlife habitat, enhance water quality, give us places to recreate, and support education and research.  But what is a wetland?  How do I know if there is a wetland on my property?  What are the Vermont rules about wetlands?  On Wednesday, October 21st from 6 to 7:30 at the Burke Community Building, we’ll be joined by Burke’s own Elise Lawson, Natural Resources Consultant and Biologist, and Lauren Sopher, a Wetland Ecologist with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.  Elise and Lauren will explore these questions and more!

This event is free and open to the public.  Light snacks will be provided.  Contact emily@caledoniacountynrcd.org with questions or to request an accommodation.

Sponsored by the Burke Conservation Commission and the Caledonia County Natural Resources Conservation District.
