Join Passumpsic Valley Land Trust and CCNRCD for a Passumpsic River clean-up day!

We have two main goals for this event: remove tires and other trash from the river and connect people to the river through stewardship.

General Overview:

Folks will meet at the site in a farm field (this year it had winter squash being grown by Joe's Brook Farm!) at 10 am.  We'll plan to wrap up by 1 pm.  The field is located between 4237 and 4018 US Route 5 in St. Johnsbury.  There will be signs!  NEK Outfitters & Guide Service have donated a fleet of canoes, paddles, and lifejackets for use at the event.  We also believe that many of the tires in the Passumpsic River at this location will be able to be removed without the use of canoes, but it will depend on water levels.  We will have snacks, lunch, water, and a porta potty on site.

Parking:

Parking will be available in the farm field in a signed location, likely on the edge of the field closer to Route 5.

Who Can Come:

Everyone!  Folks of all ages, experience levels, and ability are welcome to join us.  Note the work might be hard and it might be cold, but we know you're up for the challenge.  Everyone will need to sign a waiver, and participants under the age of 18 will need a guardian to sign a liability waiver for them. 

What to Bring:

Volunteers should be prepared for a few hours in the sun on/in the water. 

• Close-toed water shoes or old sneakers- If you plan to get in the river to haul out trash and tires, these are recommended as there can be sharp objects in the river.  We think waders will be useful in this location, so if you have them, bring them!  They are not required.
• Sun-protective clothing (light-colored sun hoodie, long pants, hat w/ brim)- reduces the amount of sunscreen you have to wear that will wash off and pollute the river. 
• Polarized sun glasses- protect your eyes from the sun and make it easier to spot trash (and fish) in the water.
• Water Bottle- Stay hydrated! We will not be passing out bottled water but will provide a refill station.
• Work Gloves- To ensure you have well-fitting gloves, please bring your own that are water-worthy and tough enough to handle bulky trash. We’ll have only a few extra pairs handy.
